Now fancy that.
Could it be we are simply victims of our own success with some teams only raising their game when they take on the league leaders. It's tough at the top.
And today was no exception. Credit to Sutton who played out of their skins and had a real go this afternoon.
On the balance of play though it was only a matter of time until a goal was scored. What I didn't anticipate was, when that moment finally arrived it would be the hosts who got it.
An action packed goaless first half saw a well struck Amy Russ volley, from the edge of the box, saved by keeper Marni Humphries as early as the 5th minute.
On 8 minutes Sutton's manager, Lucy Clark, was in the lino's ear accusing one of our girls of blocking their player in a manner more akin to the NFL. At this point I was looking forward to the post match interview already, despite the game being in it's infancy.
12 mins the home side saw a shot sail over the bar followed by another one on target a minute later which was was well saved by Jade Charlton.
In the 14th minute a cracking cross, sent in with pace by Shauni Griffiths, ricoched off a U's defender which almost resulted in a spectacular own goal.
4 minutes later Shauni was at it again forcing a good save from Humphries, with a wonderful strike from outside the box.
In the 36th minute a travesty of justice was narrowly avoided when a break away by Sutton lead to a blocked effort turned behind for a corner coming to nothing, after Brionne Fowle had been fouled in the opposition's half.
In the 37th minute Beth Powell got booked
This is unusual for Beth and grossly unfair. I have to say that being her sponsor. So if it sounds like I'm being biased then it's what it is.
In any case, from what I can gather, all she did was give the referee some friendly advice. Wires obviously got crossed somewhere along the line and the official took it the wrong way. Although it sounded pretty straightforward to me.
After coming on for the remaining ten minutes at Ashford last week, new signing Amina Hanif made her full debut today and did very well. On 38 minutes, following a dazzling run down the left wing taking on anyone barring her way, I counted three, her final ball played in Shauni who's shot brought a fine save from the keeper.
In the 42nd Humphries was called into action again saving a good effort from Emily Woodhouse before stopping a header by Shauni from a Russ cross on the stroke of half time.
3 minutes into the second half it was a case of how the hell did that not go in! Bedlam ensued in Sutton's penalty area as Lizzie Adams shot was cleared off the line and more bodies entered the fray in an attempt to force the ball into the net.
For every shot there was a block. It was boots versus shin pads and somehow Sutton survived.
And then ten minutes later things got serious. Amelia Cutler, who scored a brace against Barking in midweek, put the U's 1-0 up in the 61st minute.
Jubilant celebrations followed but you know what they say when you've just scored? If you don't then ask Amina.
Three minutes later, a brilliant ball driven into the box by Adams found the Pakistani international unmarked at the far post and she made no mistake with a clinical finish to level the score.
A mad seven minutes was completed on 68 mins when Shauni's free kick into the area found the head of Emily Vaughan. When that happens there's usually only one outcome where Vaughany is concerned. And this was no exception either. 2-1 Dartford. Sutton's celebrations reduced to a distant memory in a flash of well executed brilliance.
There were a few more chances to put the game well and truly to bed. 73 mins Hanif shot just over the bar from the edge of the box. 80 mins Georgie Davis rose highest from a corner but her header just went over and Paris Smith did likewise with a volley on 83 mins. However, our girls kept their discipline to see the game out.
Shauni was worryingly carried off during the closing stages but assured me she would be fine. It sounded like an evening spent with the icepack coming up.
There were several candidates for player of the match including Lizzie and Ellie Dolby. Infact it was a battling team performance which everyone can be proud of. But rather than take the easy way out I've got to nominate someone. And I've chosen Amina Hanif. Her timely intervention changed the course of the game by quickly getting us back on track.
Finally, a word about the referee. I thought he managed the game rather well with a bit of humour now and then to help maintain his authority as well as his sanity. Even though he refused to heed Beth's constructive piece of advice.
But if we had the referee who took charge of our game at Saltdean, I've no doubt it would have been a very different story. He would have had both dugouts arrested for starters.
Infact, I don't think the match would even have been completed to be honest. He would more than likely have thrown a hissy fit, called for a cab and buggered off home.
