MILLWALL LIONESSES 0-5 DARTFORD

Post by Ajaxman DFC »

This is always a feisty fixture usually resulting in a red card.
It is just a question of to whome. Us or them? A competitive fixture our legendary Lizzie Adams always relishes. In the nicest possible way ofcourse!
Our ladies hit the ground running and within 4 minutes we were 1-0 to the good.
Milo Lewis-Powell won a corner and the delivery from Abbey Davies found Mercedes Bromfield who fired in from close range. The shot appeared to take a deflection on the way too but as with the former Bromley player's inaugural goal for her new club, no one was going to take it away from her.
On 10 mins Millwall spurned a great chance to equalise when Mia Lockett unleashed her shot straight at Jade Charlton who handled it well. Lockett never quite got over that for the rest of the game. Her frustration took hold during the second half when an altercation with Davies should have seen her receive a second yellow. Ironically it was Abbey who was booked yet Lockett was the worst offender. The referee bottled that one.
In the 34th the lead was doubled after a long ball from Jade landed in the path of Leen Ekwo. Leen sprinted towards goal and calmly despatched her shot beyond keeper Jessica Deans.
Worse was to come for the Lionesses when a huge psychological blow was struck on the stroke of half time. Davies' shot from distance was going in as soon as she hit it with the ball curling into the bottom right corner, leaving Deans well beaten.
Within 4 minutes of the restart Abbey sent a tantalising cross into the box. Leen was alive to it and guided the ball past the keeper into the far corner for Darts 4th and Leen's 2nd of the game.
And then at last, in the 72nd minute after already creating several chances for herself, Lizzie finally got the goal her performance deserved. Another great run down the right from Milo ended with her pinpoint cross to the Darts legend who fired home to seal a well earned 5-0 victory.
And not too long after the 5th goal went in the inevitable customary red card arrived.
Millwall's Emma Squirrel received a second yellow for a dangerously high boot to Abbey's head.
I don't know what she was thinking of but Squirrel was clearly out of her tree and swiftly despatched into permanent hibernation for the remainder of the game.
Player of the match the industrious Lizzie Adams, who was determined to score, driving her team on with the shear grit and determination she's renowned for.
All in all though it was a great team performance from everyone involved.
So many pluses all over the park already this season. It was great to see Milo get a full 90 minutes under her belt too.
Report posted on the road from National Express 424. The dreaded overnight scenic slog via Heathrow T4, Heathrow T2&3, Birmingham, Walsall, Stoke, Manchester Airport, Manchester city centre, Bolton, Preston and finally Blackpool.

Crikey, I thought it was bad enough on the way home queuing for 15 minutes in Deptford!

Great report, summing up the performance throughout this game, even in the torrential rain with only a black 'umby' (I'd left my pink one in the car).
It was certainly a class performance from the Darts and thoroughly deserved the five goals, with even more in the offering.

It's great to have wingers - and good ones! - plus long corners delivered by Abbey right into the goalmouth, same too from Gabby from the left.

Well done to Jade and Harriet - joint clean-sheets!

Not for one moment taking anything away from Lizzie and her performance, but my player of the match goes to Abbey Davies. Throughout the game Millwall still had their threats and Abbey's aerial control was top-notch and her back four controlled masterfully and was brilliant coming forward too - delivering great crosses for the strikers. Then a brilliantly executed free-kick for her goal and pin-point corner-kicks right into the 6-yard box - right where you want them.

A thoroughly well-deserved win. Well done to all concerned.
