Charlie Sheringham

Striker. Signed for Dartford on 17 June 2010 from Bishops Stortford & re-signed on 31 August 2018.

"Sheringham originally started out at his father's first club, Millwall, as part of their academy set-up, before moving on to another of his father's former teams, Tottenham Hotspur. Having been released by Spurs, he was given a trial at Bournemouth, and then another at Ipswich Town, in which he impressed and was given a one-year contract.

At Portman Road, he won an FA Youth Cup winners medal as a sub in 2005. Ipswich released him in the summer of 2005. He was transferred to Charlton Athletic on a free transfer but failed to make an impact and was very soon released, after which he went on trial at Crystal Palace, playing several games for Kit Symons's reserve side.

He impressed, and was kept on for the pre-season by manager Peter Taylor, scoring in a first-team pre-season friendly at Stevenage Borough. He also impressed against American champions, the Los Angeles Galaxy, which led to him being given a professional contract, on a month-by-month contractual deal. He then impressed even further, and was given a full contract, lasting two years.

On 18 April 2007, Sheringham flew out to America with teammate Lewwis Spence to join Crystal Palace's feeder club Crystal Palace Baltimore on loan for four months, though he had to fly home early with a hairline fracture of the foot.

Sheringham was released at the end of the January 2008 transfer window without making a single first team appearance. Following his release from Crystal Palace Sheringham headed to Denmark on an eight day trial at Fremad Amager of the Danish 1st Division. The trial was set up by Charlie Sheringham's father Teddy Sheringham who is an old friend of then manager Jakob Friis-Hansen. The move fell through at the last minute.

Sheringham signed for Conference South side, Bishop's Stortford on 15 May 2009, from Welling United at the end of the 2008–09 season. Sheringham had been Welling's top scorer in the 2008–09 season, scoring 26 goals in all competitions.

Sheringham then made the move to Conference National side Histon on 13 February 2010 on loan from Bishop's Stortford until the end of the 2009–10 season."

His previous clubs were Coalville where he played 50 plus games for the club (season 2012-2013) and received various awards from the supporters and the manager. Moved to Boreham Wood 20th March 2014

As per the official site "The 31 year old striker joins us from Billericay Town where he had spent the last two seasons. Previous to Billericay he was at Bromley, Ebbsfleet and Cambridge United. Adam and Jamie” Adam comes to us with a wealth of experience and on the back of scoring 23 goals in his last 37 games for Billericay. He was a crowd favourite at new Lodge and I expect him to be liked here as well with his tireless displays. Last season in the two fixtures against us he was difficult to play against and ended up winning Billericay 2 penalties. We believe he will equally be as much of a handful for opposition defenders this season for us. We would like to thank Billericay for coming to an agreement with us for Adam and enabling his contract to be cancelled so he could sign. Both signings wouldn’t have been possible without the club supporting the team during our recent injury crisis so we are thankful for this support”.

As per:

https://www.dartfordfc.com/management-team-depart/

It is with a heavy heart, that we have to announce that Tony Burman, Paul Sawyer and Steve Mosely, are stepping down as our management team.

Tony has been at the helm as manager for the last 14 years, plus his previous spells between 1993-1996 and as caretaker in 2001. Paul Sawyer, in addition to the 2 years as a player at Watling Street, has been with the club since 1994 as a player, coach and assistant manager. Steve Mosely as a player at Watling Street and as a coach since 2007.

In total Tony played in a total of 535 games for Dartford, scoring 159 goals. He has been involved as our manager in 880 games. A total of 1415 games – a remarkable record.

Paul Sawyer played in 324 games, scoring 22 goals. As coach and assistant manager, he oversaw 935 games. In total 1259 games – again, an incredible career with the club.

Steve Mosely played a total of 89 games at Watling Street, scoring 11 goals and has been involved as part of the management team for over 500 games since re-joining the club in 2007.

Tony says:-
“I feel the time is right for us as a management team, to step aside and allow fresh blood to come in and take forward this great club. I would like to thank my fellow directors, the supporters and volunteers, plus the many players I have managed over the years, for their support and commitment.

The last 10 years, here at Princes Park, have been one of the most successful periods in the club’s history and I have been immensely proud of our achievements. The winning of the Isthmian League, Division One (North) and Premier Division, plus the Conference South Promotion Final and 2 Kent Senior Cup Finals, have all been achieved in this period – success indeed”

We now start the process of looking for a new management team and will announce that in due course.
In the meantime, I think you will agree, that we must all pass on our gratitude and immense thanks to Tony, in particular, but also Paul and Steve, for the their incredible part in this period of the club’s history.

John Macrae - Goalkeeping Coach

Left Dartford in May 2014 after 9 years to find a new venture.

The John Macrae Interview courtesy of http://custardsdfcarticles.normblogs.com/ (link no longer working), text below:

Not often does my pulse race, but when told by my Editor that John Macrae, Dartford's legendary goalkeeping coach had finally consented to an exclusive interview, I was staggered. Within hours I was on the first plane out of Havana to meet this goalkeeping guru hoping to get an insight into what makes him tick.

Macrae is an enigma. He is the man behind the man behind the back four. He is rugged, handsome, adored by women and revered by men. The man is a colossus and yet modest at the same time, very rarely mentioning his role within the club or that he was once crowned as the 1987 World Indoor Shirt Champion in Copenhagen.

The interview took place in John's beautiful penthouse suite overlooking leafy Lewisham.

Q) How did you get into Goalkeeping and who was you biggest influence?

JM) At the age of nine I was picked for my school team and gave away five penalties in six games, so I was put in goal. After that forever! My biggest influences were my Mum and Dad. Dad was a non-league keeper but unfortunately died when I was very young. Player wise Lev Yashin and Jack Kelsey (Arsenal and Wales).

Q) How has the art goalkeeping changed during your career?

JM) It has changed in so many ways. For instance when I started we had the four step and bounce around the area rule, now it's just the six seconds in possession. The back pass rule (I hate it). The balls are different, the gloves you must wear now to save shots are different, it's all changed.

Q) How do you rate the set up at Princes Park?

JM) Can any non-league club beat it?

Q) We recently saw Tony Kessell depart Princes Park. How difficult is that to deal with as a coach, and how do you try to motivate a player when their confidence starts to slip?

JM) At the end of the day I am the clubs goalkeeping coach so really it's the maxim "The King is dead, long live the King" But I am still in touch with Tony and Kevin Hudson because a bond does develop. As to motivating players? Well, being a mature person with 50 years of life and goalkeeping experience is something I can really draw on because the mistakes and errors they make I've made myself during my own career. So I do know how they feel and I can help them (I hope) to come out of it and feel good again about their performances.

Q) You recently attended a training camp in Italy. What was it like?

JM) Fantastic! Great weather, facilities and company. I felt like a pro for a fortnight.

Q) Is it true that you are a devotee of the music of Chas 'n' Dave?

JM) No! Ian Dury and the Blockheads

Q) You managed to drop the Ryman League North Trophy last season. As a goalkeeping coach do you think this gives out the wrong message?

JM) Did anyone notice?*

* At this point in the interview things go a bit awry. I present Macrae with photographic evidence of him dropping the trophy last season and his security detail goes ballistic. For a while it looks like the interview is all but over. But Macrae, ever the gentlemen calms things down and allows it to continue. However, Hector, MacRae’s personal head of security is not happy and glares at me during the rest of the afternoon with a malevolence that leaves one feeling rather uneasy.

Q) This isn't an isolated event though is it? you've done it as a player as well!

JM) Correct (deep sigh). 1979 Spartan League Champions with Catford Utd, but it was 10pm in a bar in Lewisham. Caused £50 worth of damage though.

Q) Tell us about Keeper Wars, how it started, its aims and how you see it developing?

JM) Next year (2009) will be the 3rd UK Keeper Wars at Dartford and we have Peter Bonetti coming. The Kent FA have said that they would like to come on board and run a women's and children's competition on the Saturday with the men's event held on the Sunday. But will it rain????

Q) Have you started to groom your successor yet?

JM) Yes is the answer. And these are the three who would follow me. Craig Clarke who helps me with Keeper Wars and has just become Chatham's goalkeeping coach. Lee Heywood who coaches at Holmesdale, that's two, and also Tony Kessell who is going to do his 1st keeper badge this summer. Hopefully I can leave a legacy.

Q) Lastly, describe yourself in five words.

JM) Gregarious, Enthusiastic, Loyal, Honest, Hard working... hold on, that's six!

I left Macrae as I had found him, studying the Ikea catalogue, a glass of Chablis in one hand and the phone in the other discussing another possible candidate to join his ever growing college of young hopeful keepers. You can rest assured that Dartford’s goal is in safe hands with this man. What a guy!

John Macrae was interviewed by Carlos Mondragon - February 2008

Rumour has it that he will have a knee operation on 19th May 2014 & then onto pastures new, ie Welling Utd in London.

Matt Godden

Signed for Dartford on loan 8.10.2013 & returned in December 2013

As per: http://www.scunthorpe-united.co.uk/team/player-profile/index.aspx?playerid=431703&tcmuri=19892

"UPDATED 09:18 16th July 2012

Talented young striker Matt Godden signed professional terms with Scunthorpe at the end of the 2008-09 season after rising through the ranks as a trainee.

Godden endured a an injury-hit final campaign as a trainee but his prowess infront of goal went a long way towards securing him a new deal.

Scunthorpe extended his original deal on 8th June 2010 after successful spells out on loan. He joined Brigg Town for 3 months in 2009 where he managed a return of 9 goals in 20 starts for the Zebras in his first spell of competitive football. Godden then spent time on loan at Ilkeston Town before ending the campaign with a prolific run of goals for the Iron's reserve side.

His deal was extended again in March 2011 for a further 26 months after making his first team debut for Scunthorpe earlier that season against Manchester United in the League Cup. His league debut came in December 2010 in a 2-0 defeat of Burnley.

Injury kept Godden out of contention for much of the 2011-12 season with his only playing time coming whilst on loan for a short but fruitful period at Gainsborough Trinity.

Godden then rejoined Trinity on a six-month loan deal at the beginning of the 2012-13 season but he was again struck by injury, after just one game. Ebbsfleet then took him on temporarily whilst returning to fitness prior to Godden featuring more prominently for Scunthorpe at the end of the season."

Mark Arber

Signed for Dartford in July 2012

As per: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Arber

Arber plays as a central defender or a left full back. He began his career with Tottenham Hotspur in 1996; he made no appearances in the first team prior to his release in 1998, being sent out on loan to Barnet that year, where he made 8 league appearances.

Following his release by Tottenham he signed for Barnet on a permanent contract and became a regular in the first-team squad, making 167 appearances and scoring 23 goals between 1998 and 2002, when he joined Peterborough United.

At Peterborough, Arber was again a regular in the side, making 69 appearances and scoring 5 goals prior to a short stint with Oldham Athletic in 2004; at Oldham, he played only 14 times, scoring one goal.

After his time at Oldham ended, Arber rejoined Peterborough, and between 2005 and 2007 he made 101 appearances, scoring 3 goals. Near the end of his second spell at Peterborough, in 2007, he went out on loan to Dagenham & Redbridge, playing six times.

He left Peterborough once more in June 2007 and joined Stevenage Borough on a free transfer; at Stevenage, Arber made 27 appearances, scoring 5 goals.

On 12 February 2008, Arber rejoined Dagenham & Redbridge on loan until the end of the 2007–08 season. At the end of the season Arber signed for Dagenham on a permanent basis. He soon became captain of the side, leading them to a 3–2 victory over Rotherham United in the League Two play-off final in May 2010.

In May 2012, after making 163 appearances and scoring 11 goals, Arber was released by Dagenham upon the expiry of his contract. Subsequently, Arber signed for Blue Square Bet Premier newcomers Dartford in late July 2012.

Richard Rose

Signed for Dartford on 6th August 2012 after his contract with League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge was terminated by mutual consent.

As per: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Rose_%28footballer%29

Rose was born in Tonbridge, Kent and joined Gillingham as a youth player. Whilst still a trainee he made his professional debut as a 14th minute substitute in Gillingham's 2–1 defeat at Crewe Alexandra on 16 April 2001. Rose went on to play in the final four games of the season in place of the injured Mark Patterson. He made only a handful of Division One appearances for the Gills in the following two seasons, but had a 9 match spell on loan at then Division Three side Bristol Rovers during the 2002–03 season. He was reported to have done well whilst with the Pirates, receiving glowing reports from manager Ray Graydon.

Rose started to establish himself more in the 2004–05 season, during which time he played 20 times (18 in the league), mostly at right or left back. Gillingham were eventually relegated back down to League One at the end of that season. Relegation prompted the departures of Nyron Nosworthy (a right back) and John Hills (a left back), presenting Rose to stake a claim for a regular spot in the starting line-up in League One. Things certainly started according to plan as Neale Cooper gave Rose a permanent right-back spot. With Cooper's departure midway through the season, Rose was out of favour under new manager Ronnie Jepson and only made one more appearance for the first team. He was released on 9 May 2006.

Rose soon found a new home at newly-promoted Hereford United where he played initially in centre midfield. He started 15 out of the first 16 matches of the season in League Two and scored his first senior goal in a 2–0 home win over Chester. He was then dropped in favour of loan signings John Eustace and Neil MacKenzie. When he returned to the side he reverted to the defence where he finished the season as third choice centre back.

Rose was used mainly as a full-back during the 2007–08 season and scored the second goal of his career in a superb 5–1 victory over Darlington. He was a regular starter for the Bulls in their promotion-winning season, but was sidelined for six weeks mid-season with a fractured ankle. Rose started 17 of the final 20 league matches of the season as Hereford finished third in League Two.

In August 2011 Rose signed for Dagenham & Redbridge.

Richard is a cousin of former EastEnders actor Ricky Groves.

Made 42 (and 3 as sub) appearances for Dartford in the 2012-2013 season. Scored 2 goals, picked up 3 yellows.

Left Dartford on 31st May 2013. Official website said "After a discussions with Richard Rose, Richard has decided to accept an offer from another club.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Richard for his great contribution to Dartford FC and wish him all the very best of luck in the future.
Thank you for your support. Tony Burman".

Jacob Erskine

Signed for Dartford on 21 October 2011 from Hampton & Richmond Borough. He left Hampton on 7 October 2011.

Born in London, Erskine started his career at non-League club Croydon Athletic, before joining his first Football League club, Dagenham & Redbridge. He was sent out on loan to non-league clubs Tooting & Mitcham United, Dorchester Town, Margate and Maidstone United, but was ultimately released by Dagenham at the end of the 2008–09 season, having failed to break into the first team in two years with the club.

He spent the close season with Bromley, for whom he played in a friendly against Gillingham, impressing their manager Mark Stimson sufficiently to earn a one-year contract with the Football League One club. The deal included a clause stipulating that Bromley will benefit financially should Gillingham sell Erskine to another club, as well as "certain other terms which Bromley feel will benefit the club in the long run".

Erskine made his Football League debut as a late substitute in Gillingham's opening game of the 2009–10 season on 8 August against Swindon Town, replacing Mark Bentley in a 5–0 win.

He was loaned back to Bromley for a month in October 2009, making five appearances for them, and scoring in an FA Cup qualifying round match. Erskine then joined another Conference South side in the form of Bishop's Stortford.

Erskine was released by Gillingham at the end of the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, he signed for Isthmian League Premier Division side Concord Rangers.

On 21 January 2011, Erskine signed for Conference National side Forest Green Rovers. He was instantly loaned out to Southern Premier Division outfit Swindon Supermarine to gain match fitness.

Erskine then signed for Ebbsfleet United in February 2011 having not made a single appearance for Forest Green. In August 2011, Erskine was informed by Ebbsfleet manager Liam Daish, that there would be no funds available to offer him a new contract for the 2011–12 season. He was then on trial for Northampton Town playing in a trial match against Milton Keynes Dons, but later signed non-contract terms with Hampton & Richmond Borough. Erskine left Hampton & Richmond in October 2011. Source

Before joining Dartford, he scored 3 league goals for Hampton & Richmond in the 2011-2012 season (16.8.2011 against Woking, 20.8.2011 against Dartford, 29.8.2011 against Basingstoke) and an FA Cup goal on 1.10.2011 against Arlesley.

30th May 2012: As per Dartford's official website "Unable to commit to the Conference Premier due to work commitments, Tony Burman would like to thank him for all for his fantastic efforts this season and wish him the very best."

30th May 2012: As per Football Exclusives

"Former Dartford man Paul Goodacre has denied claims that he left the club due to work commitments, rather he was not offered new terms as the club prepares themselves for Conference Premier football next season.

The former Bishop’s Stortford captain said: “This is not quite correct, I would never let my work commitments affect my football, although stating my departure this way is obviously easier on the eye.

"Unfortunately I was not offered new terms with the club, which is a great shame and I'm bitterly disappointed to have not been given the opportunity to have a crack at the Prem. After all that is what we all work hard towards.

“That said it's football and players come and go, I have to respect Tony's decision and move on to my next challenge. It's a fantastic club with a great bunch of players, and I'm pleased to have been a part of what I' m sure will be continued progress.”

Goodacre joined the club in 2010 from Braintree and won the Players’ Player of the Year for the 2010/11 season and admits it was difficult to take: “It's been hard to take, but I'm a man, these things happen and in football there are some you lose and some you don't.

"Unfortunately I picked up a knee injury this season which ruled me out for a long period and it essentially ruined my season. I still played over 30 games but it's just easy for people to forget that when you have been out so long.

“Last year I played 54 games and was pretty much injury free. I have got the knee back to normal now though and with Tony's decision I will now look forward to a new challenge and hopefully another one as successful is this last one.”

So what next for Paul Goodacre, is it a case of remaining in the Conference South for next season: “For as long as I can I will look to play as high as I can, I would love to keep in the Conference South.

"It's a bit difficult at the moment because I'm in Australia, but I have had one or two enquiries and Tony Burman has kept in touch so that I'm aware of any contact from other clubs. I'm contactable but the timings are just difficult.”

Goodacre has no hard feelings for his former club as they look to survive in the Conference Premier and expects them to do well: “I really hope they have a fantastic season and push on again like they have over the last few seasons. The club certainly has the infrastructure and support to fit within the league.

“I'm sure they will go into the league and find their feet quite quickly, the key for their first season will be to remain in the division, there are some huge clubs up there, but then again so are Dartford. I wish all my former teammates and friends the very best for the forthcoming season.”
